On my way to the station this morning I noticed that the Army has set up a recruiting post – well, it’s got flashy signs and pull-ups but that’s basically what it is -under the Albion Square canopy.
It seems to me that this is interesting in a few ways in terms of the state of the economy. Firstly, whatever did occupy that unit – not a hugely high-cost one despite proximity to the station – now doesn’t, presumably because it can’t afford to.
Secondly, the taxpayer is now footing the bill for the Armed Forces to rent High Street property, which would seem to contradict the MoD’s assertion that it can’t afford proper armour for personnel or decent barracks housing.
Thirdly, the Army obviously feels that Woking is a potentially rich source of recruits. I’m sure they have in mind the ethnic minority population of the town to boost their own flagging reputation for inclusion in this area.
But also they clearly feel there are enough people from all walks of life who may be in sudden need of long-term employment with housing provided and four squares a day.
Is that what Labour meant when it promised to fight unemployment?
