I’ve just been out and come back from a Horsell Village Hall meeting and on my way I was told by a resident that they had been canvassed by the Liberal Democrats. Unfortunate enough at any time but particularly as this canvasser, who shall remain nameless, tried to tell the resident that the current Conservative parliamentary majority was “two or three thousand”. When challenged, they upped this to “three or four thousand”.
For those Lib Dems that don’t know and aren’t sure, perhaps you ought not to be misleading residents on the doorstep. It’s actually 6,612.
It’s little stunts like these that make me realise that while the Lib Dems like to profess ethical social views, their election tactics can be anything but.

I’d be very grateful, if you do know who gave this misleading information, if you could let me know so I can put them right. We in the Lib Dems are very aware that the Conservative majority is in the order of a mere 6,000 or so votes.
Why doesn’t this surprise me? A Lib Dem canvasser (apparently “a young man in his early 20s”) has been telling some residents in Mayford that Conservative Cllr Simon Bellord “is standing down” at the election. Of course nothing could be further from the truth.
Hmm, I wonder who that could be? Seems they are a lot more honest about raising taxes than they are about their opponents. I just don’t get it – why mislead people about things that you can get so easily caught out on? If someone asks me about the nature of Horsell West, I just tell them the truth – I can’t imagine there is anything to be gained from lying by saying it’s Conservative-held or peddling untruths about my opponent.
I spoke to a guy who said that my biggest problem would be that people are just fed up with all politicians and don’t believe a word they say. To have Clegg claiming he’ll clean up politics on one hand while activists persist with misleading people and prolonging their mistrust for the sake of a council seat here and there is totally hyprocritical and deeply cynical.

I’m still waiting to hear from you with some information on this matter. It’s very easy to make wild allegations – how about some substance.
Ann-Marie,
Sorry to prolong your wait further, but I’m sure you don’t need my help managing your team and what they are saying to residents.
I put it to you Simon that there was in fact no such comment made and that he is simply continuing his nasty campaign as proven on my blog this evening.
If there was such a comment then name the person as requested. If you dont have proof then its obviously more bluster.
Lisa, I am relaying what I have been told by a resident who was pretty annoyed at having been misled. It’s actually quite helpful to you lot, I’m not under any obligation to place that kind of info in the public domain.
But if you think that I’m going to help you out further you’re mistaken and I didn’t name the person in the post for a reason.
“Nasty campaign”. Well, you guys should know, shouldn’t you? Have you read the Woking Journal recently?
[...] couple of weeks ago I blogged that Lib Dem canvassers on the doorstep had been misleading voters in Horsell West about the size of the existing Conservative majority in Woking. It’s not that the size of the [...]
